Where to Stay in Honiara

Where to Stay in Honiara

Your guide to the best areas and accommodation types

Honiara’s accommodation scene is compact and straightforward—expect a handful of reliable hotels clustered in three main districts, with prices driven by business travelers and the modest weekend crowd. Most visitors base themselves in or near Point Cruz for easy access to restaurants, the market and the dive shops, or move a few minutes east to quieter seaside spots. Rooms fill quickly around events or when cruise ships are in port, so booking ahead is smart even outside peak season. While Honiara is technically the capital, it feels like a small town: Wi-Fi can be patchy, air-conditioning is a luxury at the budget end, and power cuts happen. Still, the friendliness of staff and the convenience of staying central more than compensate if you choose wisely.
Mid-Range
USD 110–220 per night
Luxury
USD 220–350 per night (only a couple of genuine luxury options)

Booking Tips

Insider advice to help you find the best accommodation.

Reserve Airport Transfers Early

Most mid-range hotels include a free shuttle but only if you ask when booking; budget places can arrange it for SBD 150–200.

Check Power & Water

Confirm back-up generator and water-tank details—cuts lasting hours are common during heavy rains.

Book Restaurants Too

Popular honiara restaurants like Breakwater Café and Taj Mahal fill up quickly; reserve a table when you check in.

When to Book

Timing matters for both price and availability.

High Season

Lock in 6–8 weeks ahead for July and the Christmas–New Year window; rooms triple in price over Independence Day (7 July).

Shoulder Season

April–May and September–October offer decent weather and availability; book 2–3 weeks out.

Low Season

January–March rains mean last-minute deals are common, but bring insect repellent and expect daily downpours.

Even in low season, e-mail the hotel directly—online platforms often show hotels as ‘sold out’ when they still have rooms.

Good to Know

Local customs and practical information.

Check-in / Check-out
Standard check-in 14:00, check-out 11:00. Late arrivals are common with evening flights; notify the hotel to keep your room.
Tipping
Not compulsory; rounding up taxi fares or leaving SBD 5–10 per bag for porters is appreciated.
Payment
Major hotels accept Visa/Mastercard with a 3–4 % surcharge; smaller guesthouses prefer cash in Solomon dollars (SBD). ATMs are in Point Cruz and at the airport.
Safety
Stick to lit streets after dark, avoid flashing valuables, and use hotel taxis at night—crime is opportunistic rather than violent.
